Aspartame, a popular artificial sweetener found in Diet Coke, chewing gum, yoghurt and other food products, is set to be declared a possible carcinogen next month by a World Health Organization arm. The news of this possible declaration comes a month after WHO had warned against the usage of artificial sweeteners. Aspartame is one of the most popular non-nutritive sweeteners in the market today and is even used in products labelled as diet, sugar-free...or with no or low calorie and even zero sugar. It is basically an odorless powder that is white in color and is 200 times sweeter than normal sugar. This means that a very small amount of the same is needed to sweeten food and beverages.
